Lincoln Log Cabin State Historic Site

Volunteer Opportunities

Would you like to help us bring history to life?

The Volunteer Pioneers work at Lincoln Log Cabin to help the visiting public experience 1840s life and to see where Abraham's parents, Thomas and Sarah Bush Lincoln, lived during their retirement years.

The VPs are involved in many areas of the site's operation. They help staff the Lincoln and Sargent farms during the summer season, talking with visitors and assisting with living history activities. VPs are also instrumental in staffing the site's special events during the year from Sheep to Clothing in May to the Harvest Frolic in October and the Prairie Christmas in December.

VPs also staff the new visitor center, work behind the scenes in the office or sewing shop, operate the Goosenest Prairie Gift Shop and run concessions at site events. The Volunteer Pioneer organization has recently developed its own line of historic boots and shoes and has secured world-wide marketing rights for them. Volunteers enjoy attending monthly "pitch-in" meetings, visiting other historic sites and attending regional museum conferences. Without a doubt, the Volunteer Pioneers have made a tremendous contribution to Lincoln Log Cabin, helping to make it one of the finest historic sites in the nation.

There are many areas that Volunteers have to choose from:

  • Interpretation
  • Living History
  • Visitor Center Receptionist
  • Outreach
  • School Groups
  • Period Sewing
  • Gift Shop Operator
  • 19th Century Farming
  • Computer Operation
  • Office work / bulk mailings

Do you have, or would you like to learn 19th century skills?

Do you have a 19th century skill such as weaving, knitting, tatting, spinning, or blacksmithing that you would share with others? Or would you be interested in learning any of these or many other skills that are utilized on the Lincoln or Sargent farms?

Lincoln Log Cabin - a First-Person, Living History Site.

First person, living history is an exciting way of presenting and learning the past. Through living history, the Lincoln and Sargent farms come to life as interpreters in 1840s clothing go about the daily chores and activities of 1845 farms. They care for historically accurate crops, livestock and gardens, build fences and outbuildings, do household chores and prepare a noon meal each day over the open hearth. Interpreters also talk to visitors from the viewpoint of 1845 people using the dialect of the period and discussing issues and ideas of the 1840s period.

Visitors are immersed in the past as they see, hear, feel and smell the past come alive through living history. Over 125,000 visitors a year come to Lincoln Log Cabin to experience the past coming to life. Won't you come help us present the past in such an exciting way?
